12. april: Viddal/Sahajpal

Når dørene åpnes for Viddal/Sahajpal er det for å invitere publikum til å oppleve verdens første – og eneste – sitar- og bassklarinettduo. Dette er imidlertid ikke bare en unik sjanse til å oppleve noe særegent, men er også et møte med fremragende musikere som har funnet sammen gjennom et virtuost og varmt samarbeid. Konserten inngår som en del av arrangementet Barnas lørdag på Deichman Tøyen.

Mathilde Grooss Viddal (bassklarinett) og Rohini Shajpal (sitar) ble introdusert for hverandre gjennom Global Oslo Music i 2019, og startet samarbeidet samtidig som pandemien brøt ut. Duoen debuterte på Wip-festivalen på Josefine i Oslo noe senere.

Grooss Viddal sier om sitt første møte med Shajpal at det føltes som om hun hadde kjent henne hele livet som var en sterk opplevelse.På Deichman Tøyen vil publikum få en smak av hva utøverne hver for seg står for musikalsk og som for Grooss Viddal er preget av jazz og samtidsmusikk, mens Sahajpal er godt forankret i indisk tradisjonell musikk. Her smelter tradisjoner sammen med utgangspunkt i egne komposisjoner og improvisasjoner som fanger inn det som har blitt duoens identitet.

 

 

14. februar: Ny single fra/ new single from Alright Mela

Alright Mela (original ‘orrajt mela’): a Maltese expression that can be translated as All’s well’, sums up their Arab-European music and, like a mantra, expresses the hope of a better world. After leaving confinement, Markus and Cheb Xavi formed an electro oriental dub duo in 2021, inspired by the tape music of the 70s, with a real desire to escape. The group was quickly spotted and played all over France. On tour, the musicians often bumped into each other but rarely exchanged more than a few words. But between Jaouad El Garouge, a gnawa singer and guembri player from Morocco, and the Angevin duo, the meeting was a simple one, and the desire to share the stage even more natural.

With strong lyrics on contemporary themes (migration, war, discrimination, poverty in the big megalopolises, ecology, etc.), their music invites reflection but also trance.

Anchored by bewitching electronic beats and hallucinatory oldies synths, the oud and guembri sound the revolt so that Alright Mela’s songs give you an irresistible urge to dance with your fist raised. A militant commitment to a groove for all!
The trio have escaped across the Mediterranean, drawing on their inspirations as they meet new people to explore new lands of sound between Europe, North Africa and the Middle East, inviting you to step onto the dance floor in the midst of a ‘Global Guinche’ compass rose. After nearly two years of collaboration, creations and concerts, and the release of a first EP in 2024, the trio has announced the release of two singles this winter, offering a way to warm up with a clear conscience.

In 1971, African oil and gas producing countries (OPEP: Algérie, Nigeria, Libye, Congo…)signed the Tehran and Tripoli agreements. Then began the great plundering of this wealth to build the developed world we know today, to the detriment of the poples of these producing countries and by ravaging their landscapes and natural resources. Today, at a time when the world is turning to natural and renewable energies, African countries are realizing that underground resources are exhaustible. So they said no to nuclear testing on their soil to avoid the stuttering history of seeing themselves destroy the few natural and wild territories that our planet still has, and prove that the conscience of African populations has evolved a great deal since then. «They have betrayed the word, obscured the sun. Burnt our oasis with oil and petrol…Today, African countries stand together for a world free of nuclear testing»…
