GLOBAL NIGHTS #7 – 30. mai-02. juni  (English text follows)

Velkommen til Global Oslo Musics årlige festival Global Nights! Vi har valgt Sentralen i Oslo sentrum for årets festival, som er den syvende i rekken.

I løpet av Global Nights inviteres publikum til å oppleve fremragende skapende og utøvende kunstnere gjennom en serie konserter, clubkvelder, seminarer, masterklasse og urfremføring av bestillingsverk.

MASTERKLASSE OG MATINÉKONSERT
Sammen med den senegalesiske musikeren Lamine Cissokho holder festivalartist Becaye en masterklasse og matinékonsert. Med bakgrunn fra Vest-Afrika har de begge mye å fortelle fra en kulturell arv som preger deres musikk, men også om ulike musikalske retninger de har tatt og latt seg inspirere av. Her får vi innsikt i musikktradisjoner og tradisjonelle instrumenter fra Vest-Afrika og hvordan de arbeider i møte med ulike kulturelle uttrykk. Masterklassen etterfølges av en konsert med Becaye på vokal og gitar og Lamine Cissokho på vokal og kora.



BECAYE
Becaye har i snart 30 år vært en sentral utøver på den globale musikkscenen i Norge, og han har turnert mye internasjonalt. Han bærer på en utømmelig kilde av kunnskap og erfaringer, dypt forankret i ulike kulturer. På en virtuos måte evner han å dele sin kunst og livshistorie med oss. Becaye er oppvokst i Mauritania og Senegal. Hans musikk har dype røtter i fulanitradisjoner man finner i subsahariske strøk, og som har gitt ham et særegent uttrykk beskrevet som ørkenblues og roots.



LAMINE CISSOKHO
Lamine Cissokho er fra Senegal, men bosatt i Sverige. Han er en etterkommer av en velkjent mandingomusiker. Mandingos tradisjoner går tilbake til det 14. århundre. Lamine tilhører eliten blant koraspillere i verden og har i over ti år turnert internasjonalt. Hans musikk er en unik crossover mellom mandingo, jazz, verdensmusikk og virtuose improvisasjoner. Han har samarbeidet med blant andre Ballake Sissoko, Ian Carr, Mamadou Dembele og Ibou Calebasse.

Welcome to Global Oslo Music’s annual festival – Global Nights! We have chosen Sentralen in the center of Oslo for this year’s festival – which is in its seventh year.

Through the course of Global Nights, our audience is invited to experience outstanding creative and performing artists through a series of concerts, club nights, seminars, masterclasses, and performances of commissioned works.

MASTERCLASS AND MATINEE CONCERT
Together with the Senegalese musician, Lamine Cissokho, festival artist Becaye will be holding a masterclass and matinee concert. With backgrounds in West-Africa, both artists have a lot to speak about from a cultural heritage that not only characterises their music, but also about unique musical journeys they have taken and allowed themselves to be inspired by. Here the audience receive an insight into music traditions and traditional instruments from West Africa, as well as be shown how these artists work with these instruments in order to express different cultural expressions. The masterclass will be followed by a concert – Becaye, guitar and voice; Lamine Cissokho, kora and voice.

BECAYE
Becaye has, for almost 30 years, played a central part as a musician for the global music scene in Norway – touring a great deal internationally. His art and life story are an immeasurable source of experience and knowledge, deeply embedded in the roots of differing cultures; something which he is able to share in a virtuosic manner with his audience through music, text and stories from the edge of the stage.
Raised in Mauritania and Senegal; Becaye’s music has deep roots in the Fulani traditions that one finds in the Sub-Saharan regions, and which have given him a distinctive expressiveness described as desert blues and roots.

LAMINE CISSOKHO
Lamine Cissokho from Senegal (living in Sweden) is a descendant of the well-known Mandingo musicians, whose
traditions date back to the 14th Century. Lamine belongs to the elite amongst kora players in the world; having toured internationally for over ten years. His music is a unique crossover between mandingo traditions, jazz, world music and virtuosic improvisations. He has collaborated with (amongst others) Ballake Sissoko, lan Carr, Mamadou Dembele and lbou Calebasse.

MONICA IFEJILIKA & MIDNIGHT COLORS
Denne fredagen inviterer vi til konsert som har SOULMUSIKK og ROOTS skrevet i «bold». Det er en stor glede å introdusere et helt nytt samarbeid mellom en av Norges fremste soulartister, Monica Ifejilika, og Midnight Colors, som for anledningen hentes inn fra Paris. Både Monica og den franske gruppen jobber med klassisk soulmusikk i en crossover med afrikanske tradisjoner. Sammen presenterer de ny soulmusikk ved å eksperimentere med nye og eldre tradisjoner. Det er virtuost, lekent og dansbart!

MONICA IFEJILIKA
Monica er en norsk-nigeriansk sanger og låtskriver, født og oppvokst i Oslo. Hennes sound er inspirert av en miks av den tradisjonelle nigerianske musikken og de mer moderne låtene som fylte barndomshjemmet. Debutalbumet “Keep It Solid” (2014) ble kalt ‘en original tilnærming til klassisk soulmusikk’. Som del av Norges første og eneste svarte kvinnelige kunstkollektiv, Qeeendom, har Monica opptrådt på mange store og små scener, i Norge så vel som utenlands. Det unike musikalske kollektivet utfordrer politiske og artistiske grenser, noe Monica også tar med seg i sitt eget materiale.



MIDNIGHT COLORS
Dette bandet oppstod på barer i Belleville, et av Paris’ mest fargerike strøk i hjertet av byen. Her møtes mennesker og musikksjangre fra alle verdens kulturer; de eksisterer side om side eller blandes. Ved midnatt, når de fleste er i det blå hjørnet, lyder fengende melodier, spilt med instrumenter som kommer langveis fra, med en vital kraft som gir næring til kroppen og hjertet, lar sjelen flyte, og oppfordrer til kun én ting: Å være sammen. Dette er fargene som preger midnatt, dette er Midnight Colors.

På scenen: Monica Ifejilika (vokal), Chloé Ganiayre-Fontanille (vokal), Arnaud Fournier (tangenter, loops, vokal), Sidiki Camara (perkusjon), André Viervoll (tangenter, loops, vokal).



DJ BRIGHTEYES
Etter konserten med Monica Ifejilika og Midnight Colors inviterer vi publikum til å danse til musikk spilt av en av byens ledende club-Dj’er, Fethawit Hakin aka DJ Brighteyes.
Hun er fra Stavanger, med røtter i Etiopia og nå bosatt i Oslo. I mer enn 15 år har hun jobbet som sanger og låtskriver samt utgitt to singler. De siste ti årene har hun vært aktiv som Dj i Oslos clubverden og på ulike kulturelle arrangementer, releasekonserter til festivaler, med sin miks av afrikansk club, soul, funk og hip hop.

MONICA IFEJILIKA & MIDNIGHT COLORS
Friday evening sees our audience invited to a concert which has SOUL MUSIC and ROOTS written in bold capital letters. It is a great pleasure for us to introduce Monica Ifejilika, and Midnight Colors – who have been especially flown in for the evening. Both Monica and this French group work within the genre of classical soul music in crossover with African traditions. Their music is virtuosic, playful and danceable!

MONICA IFEJILIKA
Monica is a Norwegian-Nigerian singer/songwriter. Born and raised in Oslo, her sound is heavily influenced by the blend of traditional and modern music that filled her childhood home. Her debut album “Keep It Solid” (2014) was dubbed “an original approach to classic soul music”. As part of Norway’s first and only black, female artistic collective Queendom, Monica has performed on many stages – both large and small, in Norway as well as abroad. This unique musical collective is an outlet for pushing political and artistic boundaries – impulses Monica also brings to her solo act.

MIDNIGHT COLORS
Midnight Colors began its story at a bar in Belleville – one of Paris’ most colour areas in the heart of the city. Here we meet people and music genres from all areas and cultures of the world; they exist side-by-side and blend in with one another. At midnight, when most people have sunk into a corner, catchy tunes are played – with instruments from afar. They sound with a vital force that nourishes the body and heart, that allows the soul to flow, and encourages only one thing: To be together. These are the colours that characterise midnight, this is Midnight Colors.

On stage: Monica Ifejilika (voice), Chloé Ganiayre-Fontanille (voice), Arnaud Fournier (keys, loops, voice), Sidiki Camara (percussion), André Viervoll (keys, loops, voice).

DJ BRIGHTEYES
After the concert with Monica Ifejilika and Midnight Colors, we invite our audience to dance the night away to music played by one of the city’s leading club DJs – DJ Fethawit Hakin (aka DJ Brighteyes). From Stavanger, with roots in Ethiopia and now living in Oslo, she has worked for more than 15 years as a singer/songwriter, and has also released two singles – both in Norway and abroad. For the past ten years she has been active as a DJ in Oslo’s Club World Scene and as a DJ at various cultural events, release concerts at festivals, and all with her own special mix of African club, soul, funk and hip hop.

Et kjernepunkt i Global Oslo Musics virksomhet er seminarer rettet mot artister med behov for hjelp til å etablere eller profesjonalisere en musikkarriere. Sammen med Laverne Wyatt tilbyr vi konseptet Music Marketing Method, som har særlig fokus på utvikling av artistprofiler og online markedsføring. I tillegg gis en oversikt over tilskuddsordninger for musikere og orientering om sentrale musikkorganisasjoner i Norge.

Music Marketing Method arrangeres under Global Nights over to dager, ledet av Laverne Wyatt.

Dag 2: Utvikle en markedsføringskampanje og publisere denne via online plattformer

LAVERNE WYATT
Med 20 års erfaring innen branding, design og markedsføring har Laverne Wyatt holdt seminarer i markedsføring for artister i samarbeid med Global Oslo Music, NOPA, MØST, BRAK og Norsk Viseforum over hele landet. Over 100 artister uten tidligere erfaring med design har deltatt på hennes seminarer. Laverne er opprinnelig fra Sør-Afrika og bor nå i Norge og Sverige, og hennes seminarer holdes på norsk og engelsk for å nå ut til en størst mulig gruppe.

Global Oslo Musics seminars are developed with the artist who needs help establishing and managing the marketing side of their career. Together with Laverne Wyatt we offer the Music Marketing Method workshops as a part of Global Nights, with a focus on learning and growing their marketing skills. In addition, we offer an overview of funding opportunities for musicians and of the relevant music organisations in Norway.
Music Marketing Method is arranged over two days, and is lead by Laverne Wyatt.

Day 1: How to create a professional profile as an artist as well as discover helpful digital
marketing tools
Day 2: Develop a marketing campaign and publishing it via online marketing platforms

Seminar runs from 4-7 pm

LAVERNE WYATT
With 20 years in the branding, designing and marketing business Laverne Wyatt has held music marketing workshops in conjunction with Global Oslo Music, NOPA, MØST, BRAK, Norsk Viseforum around Norway. Over 100 artists have learned in her classes, most without any design experience from before. She is South African and lives between Norway and Sweden. Her classes are in often held in English and
Norwegian to include as many as possible.
